Message from City of Victoria

Sent on behalf of Thomas Soulliere, Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities:

As you may already be aware, City Council has been working through the development of a new draft Strategic Plan and Budget for 2019. In December, Council held a number of public workshops and debated a wide range of potential actions. In the course of these discussions, Council approved a large number of motions, many of which contained inquiries for staff to investigate and report back on in the near term. This afternoon, a staff report will be published containing an initial set of responses to Council’s inquiries that will be reviewed in public sessions over the course of the coming week.

For further information about the sessions and opportunities to provide public comments to Council, please refer to the City’s website (www.victoria.ca).

Best regards,

Thomas Soulliere

IMPORTANT NOTICE RE COLVILLE DIAMONDS:

NO ALCOHOL
NO SMOKING
NO DOGS
CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES

We could lose the
diamonds
forever!!!

BELOW IS AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM CFB MANAGEMENT:

Good afternoon all.

It would appear that even through your efforts to pass on the ZERO TOLERANCE NON SMOKING POLICY on the ball diamonds on Colville Road, there are still many teams that are non compliant. Last week we cleaned over 100 cigarette butts from one diamond alone only to return after a few days to find the benches and fields littered with cigarette butts. We have the potential to have a serious fire hazard and threaten the property surrounding the fields which include the Military Cemetary and Gorge Vale Golf Course and its surroundings. We are taking this very seriously and have asked you as league organizers to do your part to ensure smoking is discontinued. Although you cannot be there at every game to enforce this ruling I appreciate your efforts. Your websites are clearly informative to the smoking policy on our fields however they have fallen on deaf ears and we are making policy decisions to eliminate this all together. Not only is it a fire hazard to the area, but cosmetically it makes our well maintained fields look like ashtrays and is unacceptable to myself and our military community. If there is not a 100 percent improvement immediately I will persure a possible fine system or loss of privledges to all concerned on a daily or possibly weekly basis, which if persists will result in a loss for the remainder of the season. I trust you as organizers of your leagues will take this seriously and ensure that the ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY will be quickly adapted. Please feel free to contact me for any clarification or suggestions to help with this problem.

Used Ball Equipment

Anawim House, a non-profit house that operates as a residence for members of Victoria’s street community, is looking for new or used baseball or softball gloves, softball bats, or softballs, cones, bases, etc.

Please email Stacey if you have anything to donate. They would greatly apppreciate it.

Victoria Senior Men's Day League

Victoria Sr. Men’s Day League is looking for new players to complete rosters for the 2024 season. This six team league is competitive recreation play for anyone 55+. Games are played at Centennial Park in View Royal on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings during May through mid-September.

Anyone interested in participating is asked to contact:
•  Chris Nelson at 250-388-4792 ( cnelson48@shaw.ca ) or
•  Earl Henderson at 250-652-1538 ( saerhenderson@gmail.com ).

ASA Approved Bats

The Executive will continue to look into the bat safety issue as safety is our prime concern.

The following bats are NOT approved for use in VMMSL games:

  • Miken DC 41
  • Combat Centenarian
  • Miken 2
  • Miken Ultra 2
  • Miken Maxload
  • Jak'd Nemesys 1
  • Jak'd Nemesys 2
  • Jak'd Blackout

Bats used in our league MUST have the USSSA thumbprint and a bat performance factor of 1.20 except of course the ones listed above. Please note that bats with the league sticker and no USSSA thumbprint are NOT usable.

Submit Game Results for League Standings

The League Standings, which include each team's winning percentage used for playoffs, will automatically be up to date as long as all scores are submitted.

It is the responsibility of each team, whether you win or lose, to enter the score after each game, but only one team needs to do so.

When you shake hands after the game, Managers need to decide which team will submit the score to the website. Usually the winner!

Rained Out or Postponed Games

If you require a field for a rainout, a practice or to reschedule a game for any reason you can use one of the fields listed on the Extra Fields page. These fields are available on a first-come first-serve basis.

Make arrangements with the other team as to when you want to play the makeup game then contact Kevin Trenholm, League President, to book the field both teams have decided on.

C Division "Run-By" Rule

The Run-By Rule is officially incorporated into the Victoria Men’s Masters Slopitch League to provide a SAFE, no-contact game for those C Division teams wishing to use this rule. Teams will decide to use the rule or not. If one team wants to use the rule then it must be used.

It is a common sense rule and the details below are guidelines for game umpires to make decisional calls when the rule is in use.

Standard league rules involving the base runner and plays at first base do not change when the Run-By Rule is in use.

In all cases, the maximum distance for running by shall be 3 feet inside or outside of the base with the exception of home plate where a minimum of 5 feet to the outside of home plate will be required.

When a ball is hit to the infield or outfield and a runner is advancing:

Runner advancing from 1st base to 2nd base:

If the runner does not intend to advance to 3rd base during the play, the runner will run by (not touching) 2nd base, on the opposite side of the base from the ball in play, so as not to come between the ball in play and the defensive player. Neither the base runner nor the defensive player shall interfere with each other. The runner must make every attempt to avoid interfering with defensive player attempting a throw to 1st base in the event a double play is being attempted. The runner will then return to 2nd base and await the next play.

Runner advancing from 1st base to 2nd base with intent to advance:

If the runner decides to advance to 3rd base while running to 2nd base during the play as it is obvious a play at 2nd base is not likely, he must tag the base on his way by as per normal rules. Neither the base runner nor the defensive player shall interfere with each other.

Runner advancing from 1st base to 2nd base with intent to advance after run-by:

If the runner decides to advance to 3rd base after he has already run by 2nd base then the runner must return to and touch 2nd base before proceeding to 3rd base. Neither the base runner nor the defensive player shall interfere with each other.

Runner advancing from 2nd base to 3rd base:

If the runner does not intend to advance to home during the play, the runner will run by (not touching) 3rd base on the opposite side of the base from the ball in play, so as not to come between the ball in play and the defensive player. Neither the base runner nor the defensive player shall interfere with each other. The runner will then return to 3rd base and await the next play.

Runner advancing from 2nd base to 3rd base with intent to advance:

If the runner decides to advance home while running to 3rd base during the play as it is obvious a play at 3rd base is not likely, he must tag the base on his way by as per normal rules. Neither the base runner nor the defensive player shall interfere with each other.

Runner advancing from 2nd base to 3rd base with intent to advance after run-by:

If the runner decides to advance to home plate after he has already run by 3rd base, then the runner must return to and touch 3rd base before proceeding home. Neither the base runner nor the defensive player shall interfere with each other.

Runner advancing from 3rd base to home:

The runner will run by and not touch home plate. The runner is to run by home plate on the right side of the plate so as to keep clear of the back catcher and the ball in play.

Sliding into bases or home:

Sliding is not allowed unless returning to a base to avoid being tagged out.

Consequences for violations:

If the base runner does interfere with the defensive player, he will be called out. If the defensive player interferes with the base runner, the base runner will be awarded one base. Infractions are a judgement call on the part of the umpire.

If the umpire does not observe the infraction, he will so indicate and play will continue with no consequence.

In all cases, the judgement of the umpire will be final.

As mentioned at the AGM remember to get your team roster in to Tom Fristoe or updated on the web before you play your first game so that your players are covered by the insurance.

PUT ME ON A TEAM

Want to Get On a Team? - Fill In the Form Below

VMMSL has two divisions — Competitive and Recreational. All batters and base runners in both divisions are required to wear helmets which are being provided by the League.

In the Competitive Division games are self-umpired and sliding is permitted. Within the division there are a couple of teams with a higher skill level and games involving these teams playing a less skilled team will play with a handicap. Minimum age requirement is 35.

In the Recreational Division games are self-umpired. Sliding is not permitted. The default rule in effect is that base runners are required to run-by second and third base, much like first and home, when there is the possibility of a play being made on the runner at those bases. Therefore, the defensive player receiving the ball while touching the base before the runner arrives will force all outs. The onus is on the runner to avoid interfering with the defensive player and ensure a clear throwing lane. Minimum age requirement is 40. In this division the majority of players are in their 50s and 60s and emphasis is on a relaxed and safe atmosphere.

If you would like to join the League please complete this form and someone will contact you.

Rosters

Team Rosters

Teams now have the ability to input their team roster on this website. The data can be edited, deleted, and printed from this web page and it will be stored for years to come.

Our goal is to keep the data up-to-date on this site and produce electronic versions to send to SPN or NSA for their purposes. Next season your roster will still be here and may require just a few edits to get it up to date.

The page is self explanatory but if you need help please do not hesitate to click here to email for assistance.

When entering the year you were born only put in the year of birth, such as 1949. The month and day are NOT required. And please DO NOT use all capital letters as there is limited space on the form.

The login required on this page is the same user name and password used to submit scores after each game.
